GRADUAL SHIFT
“Painting people has been an interest since the time I was a little girl creating
characters in a sketchbook,” says Kordic. “I accepted my first portrait commission
when I was 18 years old, and that became a regular part of my work life until the
market crash of 2008.” With the collapsing economy, the artist found herself with-
out commissions and, as a result, with time to think about more fulfilling directions
in painting. “I was pretty straight-up traditional until 2011–12, when I literally
became bored with painting realistically,” she recalls. “It was a very gradual change,
not preconceived. I simply became more and more curious about what paint can do,
and the imagery began taking a back seat to that exploration. Over time, that curi-
osity shifted and morphed to what it is today. I expect and hope it will continue to
take me to new painting ground.”
With her embrace of adventure in painting, Kordic adopts a highly flexible tech-
nique, one that’s open to suggestion, intuition and the workings of imagination
