means that each painting will be made
differently as the artist responds to
what’s happening in the work. A fairly
characteristic process can be seen in
Still Point, for which the artist took
pictures at various stages, allowing us
a glimpse of the creative process (see
Adventure in Figuration, pages 45–47).
Kordic’s approach to painting is
also one that she has taken up in
her drawings. In Lean In (above), for
example, she began with a drawing
of the model, only to obliterate it
by brushing charcoal dust across
the surface. Further marks and
erasures create a sense of depth,
action and atmosphere throughout
