The year is 1945, and two former Dutch resistance
members are investigating the sale of stolen art
masterpieces to Nazis. Among the recovered paintings
is a Vermeer sold to Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring.
Implicated is portraitist Han van Meergerin, who had
amassed a fortune as an art dealer during World War II.
But competing motives are at work—and both truth
and genius are hard to pin down. Sony Pictures Classics
historical-fi ction feature fi lm The Last Vermeer,
opening on May 21, tells the intriguing story.ABOVE
