Be aware that some babies genuinely do
struggle in this position. ‘Babies can feel real
discomfort during tummy time if their bodies have
been moved slightly out of alignment,’ says Clare.
‘This can happen during birth, particularly if you had a
forceps or ventouse delivery.’ Tummy time upset isn’t the
only sign of a misalignment. You might also notice that
your baby always turns his head to a certain side when
he’s sleeping or always wants to feed in one position. If
you’re concerned about this, ask your health visitor or
GP to recommend a baby osteopath in your area –
someone who specialises in cranial osteopathy.
‘This is a gentle way of massaging your baby’s
head to release stress and realign his
body,’ says Clare. ‘Once that’s done,
the issues over tummy time
should clear up.’every bit of his body that’s in contact with
the ground.’ That’s why it’s also important
to make sure that your baby isn’t in bulky
clothing for tummy time. If he’s got too
many layers on, or his clothes are too thick,
it will be harder for him to move and he
won’t get as much sensory feedback. Think
light, seam-free clothing that’s comfortable
to move in. ‘When he’s really little, you can
also roll up a small towel or a baby blanket
and put it under your baby’s chest and
armpits, for extra support,’ says Clare.
