PREGNANCY
I’ve been attending a
slimming group. Should I
stopnow I ampregnant?
Frances Walton,
Glasgow
If you had a raised Body Mass
Index (BMI) prior to pregnancy,
working on healthy eating and
keeping active is the best thing
you could have done for you
and your baby. However, it is
not advisable to try to lose
weight during pregnancy, and
there is no evidence that
losing weight in pregnancy
reduces the chance of
any complications.
There is no official
guidance on what
weight gain is
considered
appropriate in pregnancy, and
remember that extra weight
includes your baby, placenta,
amniotic fluid and increased
blood volume. However, if you
feel concerned about excess
weight gain talk to your
midwife. Having the support
of a slimming group can be
beneficial – especially if it is a
group you already know. The
Royal College of Midwives
works with Slimming World to
support pregnant women and
new mothers adopt healthier
eating patterns and to become
more active. Your midwife or
GP can refer you so that you
can attend for free. HO
Q
Since becoming pregnant, my face
has become spotty. Why?
Debbie Bateman, Thirsk
During pregnancy your
hormones are raging –
and for lots of women that
can mean skin changes.
Testosterone is thought to
be the main culprit and
increases by 70 per cent in
pregnancy, stimulating the
sebaceous glands in the skin
to produce more sebum
than is required, which mixes
with dead skin cells and
normal bacteria to block the
follicles and cause spots. Be
gentle with your skin, keep it
clean, but don’t use anything
harsh. Keeping hydrated
and eating well will also
help to improve the general
appearance of the skin. HO
