The Padres
made their
biggest winter
splash by
rummaging
in the back of
their closet.
Mothballed
since the days
of Carmelo
Martínez, the
team’s true
colors are back:
a distinctive
brown-and-gold
scheme (worn
by FERNANDO
TATIS JR.,
MANNY
MACHADO and
ERIC HOSMER
at a November
unveiling)
that signaled
the arrival of
the franchise
in 1969. The
back-to-nature
hues will grace
the Padres’
everyday unis
for the first time
since ’90. Says
team owner Ron
Fowler, “This
is going to be
the uniform we
win [our first]
championship
in.” Maybe so,
but San Diego
fans would
probably be
satisfied to
see the new
duds produce a
winning season.
The Padres
haven’t had
one since
