Q&A
This year has seen a huge
influx of comics taking
to the stage. Why do you
think that is?
I think comedians have seen
that you can come on the
show and be really
successful afterwards.
We’ve only had one comic
win the show, but several
have gone on to achieve
great success. Comedians
have got two or three
minutes in front of us, so
they have to make it count.
We heard one act – a
motorcyclist – got you up
on stage and squashed
your crown jewels...
It was quite scary because
I’d never seen that guy before.
I’m just assuming he’s good
at what he does! I was told
to remain completely still, so
I couldn’t see what was going
on – all I could do was stare up
at the ceiling. I just put my trust
in the show that I wasn’t going
to get hurt. It’s fun when one of
us gets on stage because it’s
intense. I guess it was pleasant
for Simon to see me in danger!
You’re also a successful
author. Could we see
a few of your books
become movies soon?
Well, I don’t know, I hope so.
I mean, Stephen King – I’m not
comparing myself to him
because he’s a genius – but
how many movies has he had?
Like 50? I don’t know, but if you
are writing different stories
each time, then it just brings
the stories to more people,
doesn’t it? But I’m not greedy.
I’m really happy with how
things are going.

What’s the vibe like on
the show this year?
We have quite a long
time when we don’t
see each other, so
when we come back
together it’s always good
energy. Everyone’s buzzing
to be back doing it again. And,
you know, it’s the best show on
telly, so why wouldn’t we be?
Simon’s mentioned putting
more behind-the-scenes footage
across more digital platforms
going forward...
Yeah, we always say there’s another
show behind the scenes of the show.
It’s like Carry On BGT, and I think it
would be very watchable. We get so
many views on YouTube. It’s quite
interesting, being in America too,
because you realise how many
Americans are like, “Oh we watch
Britain’s Got Talent all the time on
YouTube.” It’s a global brand!
Are you worried what might be
revealed? The judges can be pretty
naughty backstage...
Touch wood, no. I like
to think I’m not going
to do anything or say
anything that I’d
be afraid to be out
there, anyway!
