the areas of financial prosperity,
self-worth, health and body issues such
as weight loss, as well as relationships
and career. Psych-K may help you
change beliefs that limit your job
performance, for example. It can also
help with self-esteem, personal power,
grief and loss, dyslexia and other
learning diculties. It can be used to
help optimise relationships, manifest
goals, support growth in all areas of life,
enhance sporting or work performance,
and remove the mental chatter that
occurs when the brain hasn’t fully
processed stressful events of the past.
“Topics I personally deal with
a lot at Siren Soul are trust
issues, lack of self-
confidence, self-esteem
and self-love – the feeling
of not being enough,
relationship challenges,
addictions, nightmares,
money issues, anxiety and
depression, and sleep
problems,” says Fiona.
What is muscle testing
and how does it work?
More than 50 years ago George
Goodheart, the founder of applied
kinesiology, introduced muscle
testing in the United States. Applied
kinesiology has been used primarily by
chiropractors to discover physical
imbalances in the human energy
system. However, muscle testing is
also a way to communicate directly
with the subconscious mind to discover
self-sabotaging beliefs.
Fiona explains that
“During a muscle test,
the Psych-K Balance
facilitator does a
specific muscle
test, while the client
repeats a statement
or belief. If the muscle
is weak, it is a sign
the subconscious
doesn’t agree with that
statement or belief. If the
muscle is strong, it indicates the
subconscious believes the statement or
belief they’re currently holding in their
conscious mind.
“A helpful scenario is to consider
sports players. For example, when a
rugby team wins, the team players jump
up, clench and raise their fists with glee
- strong and full of energy. This is their
natural subconscious reaction; players
don’t stop to consider their winning
reaction, instead their body quickly
and simply associates the ‘win’ (the
‘positivity’), with this type of strong
physical behaviour. Equally, when
a tennis player loses their match,
they might throw their racket on
the ground, slump over with
disappointment and feel physically
and emotionally deflated.”
This principle is similar to the way
a polygraph (lie detector) machine
works by detecting physical changes
resulting from mental processes.
Therefore, muscle testing can be used
to determine what thoughts are stressful
to the body, as well as what beliefs are
supported or not supported at a
subconscious level.
What studies have
been done?
In 1999, a study was published in the
scientific journal Perceptual and Motor
Skills. The study, conducted with 89
university students, used two sets of
statements. The first involved the
person’s name. The subject was
instructed to say, “My name is (subject’s
real name).” The second statement was,
“My name is Alice/Ralph (If subject
was a male, Alice was used; if female,
Ralph was used).” The muscle test was
performed immediately after vocalising
