each statement.
The muscle response
was measured by
a computerised
dynamometer to assure
accuracy. The study
concluded that there was a
signifi cant di erence between
the muscle responses of these
individuals when they were making
a true statement versus making a false
one. Muscle testing can also be used to
detect agreement or disagreement with
more interesting statements, such as:
“I am a loving and worthwhile person,”
or, “I do my best, and my best is
good enough.”

Either arm can be used for the
testing procedure. The primary
muscle being tested is the deltoid.
Stand to the side of your
partner, facing each other.
The person being
tested extends one
arm out to the side,
parallel to the floor.
The tester keeps one
hand resting lightly
on the extended arm
between the wrist and
elbow. Pace the other
hand on the shoulder
for stability. The person being
tested keeps his/her body reaxed,
head facing forward, eyes open
and focused down, and chin
parallel to the floor.
With the arm extended from the
side, have the person being tested
think of something enjoyable – a
person, pace or activity. When
your partner is concentrating

How to muscle test:

on the good feeling, say “Be
strong” before applying a gentle,
steady pressure in a downward
direction for about two seconds
or until you feel the muscle
either ‘let go’ or ‘lock in pace’.
The person being tested is
to resist the pressure of the
downward movement. Note the
response, either strong or weak
(strong response = arm stays
straight out; weak response =
arm goes down towards floor).
Have the person being tested
imagine something unpleasant,
and repeat the muscle testing
procedure. Note any difference
between the first test and
the second. Most people will
test strong to the thought of
something they like and to
things that are true about them,
but weak to something they
don’t like and to things that
aren’t true. That is, the arm will
stay in pace parallel to the floor
when the thought is pleasing,
and move down toward the floor
when the thought is stressful. It’s
the reduction in the (electrical)
signal strength to the muscles
of the arm during the stressful
thought process that reduces
the strength of the muscles in
the arm. Repeat the test using a
statement rather than a thought.
Have the partner being tested
say something out loud that is
true, such as “My name is (actual
name).” Then have your partner
say something that isn’t true,
such as “My name is (fictitious
name),” and muscle test the
response. Stay focused on

PHOTOGRAPHY the statement.
