JO HARTLEY TAKES

A LOOK AT THE

DIFFERENT TYPES

OF METABOLISM,

WHAT THEY MEAN,

AND HOW WE CAN

USE THEM TO OUR

ADVANTAGE

YOUR TYPE?

What’s

W

e’ve all got that friend who
regularly eats burgers and
fries, and still stays trim.
Meanwhile, we only have to look at a
burger and it sticks to our hips. Sure, it
feels a little unfair, but dive deeper and
there’s more to it than that.
Metabolism is the concept that we all
digest food and convert it to energy at
different rates based on our genes.
A better understanding of it and how it
applies to us individually may help us
eat in a way that’s more beneficial.

“The theory is that
‘protein types’ are fast at
digesting their food and
turning it into energy, whereas
‘carbo types’ are slow at digesting
and creating energy, and ‘mixed
types’ are a bit of both,” says weight
loss expert Kim Beach.
To determine your metabolic type,
a healthcare professional can collect a
urine sample and a blood test to see how
fast or slow you’re digesting your food
and turning it into energy.
