A

fter Westworld’s second
season, which (spoiler alert!)
sent half the Hosts to robot
heaven, season three is like a
new show. Venturing beyond
the boundaries of the park, if the first
two seasons felt like a sci-fi Red Dead
Redemption, the latest batch of episodes
shares DNA with Detroit: Become Human.
Admittedly, Westworld’s storytelling
is more nuanced. But both deal with a
robot revolution in a society that’s put
far too much trust in AI. Sketching a
believable future full of self-driving
cars, holograms, and apps that pay
you for committing freelance crimes,
the show’s underpinning remains
philosophical musings about the nature
of life when artificial humans are
indistinguishable from the real thing.
New to the mix is Aaron Paul’s war
vet Caleb, who crosses paths with
revolutionary leader Delores early
doors, and Vincent Cassel’s Serac, who

serves as something of
an adversary now that
most of the park staff
are out of the picture.
Pleasingly, the first half
of season three is less
occupied with building
a mystery box for you
to open, and is happy
to get on with telling a
compelling, full-tilt tale.
With its disparate cast
spread to the wind for
the first half of the
season (Bernard is in
hiding, and Maeve’s
whereabouts is secret) it
remains to be seen
whether the show can
bring them together
again. But this is a
promising dawn for one
of TV’s most ambitious
shows. Jordan Farley
