all emotional. I was once that kid, and
now I’m not any more, I’m the old guy
[laughs]. But far more important is that,
to me, is where all the magic happened,
in that backyard – realising all the
chores paid off through martial arts
moves. So I got very nostalgic.
Do you see Cobra Kai as part of the
’80s-nostalgia wave that shows like
Stranger Things tap into?
Stranger Things is a period piece. And
I’ve been referenced in it once or twice,
which is fun! So I think it’s... well,
now I’m going to get really corny with
a Miyagi-ism: different but same. Cobra
Kai’s roots are in nostalgia. But the
themes of the story are as contemporary
and relevant as anything. Technology
has made bullying different, but it’s
still something people deal with.
Redemption stories, well told, will
always be something that people
gravitate towards. Cobra Kai taps into
all of that. It’s very exciting that it’s
connecting all around the globe. It keeps
the legacy of those movies alive, and
it creates something fresh. So in that
way, it’s different but it’s the same, in
a good way. Jordan Farley
