aving Private Ryan, Band Of Brothers, The Pacific... when it comes to
depicting WW2 on screen, Tom Hanks has a flawless track record,
which is reason enough to get excited about Greyhound – another
Hanks feature that unfolds in the theatre of war. But this time
America’s dad isn’t just starring, or simply producing; he penned the script
for Greyhound, his first screenplay since 2011’s Larry Crowne.

“It turned out that this was a pet
project for him – something he had
been working on in the background for
years,” says Aaron Schneider, the Get
Low director hired by Hanks to helm
Greyhound. An adaptation of C.S.
Forester’s 1955 novel The Good Shepherd,
it’s the story of newly promoted Navy
Commander Ernest Krause, whose first

assignment is to lead a convoy of 37
ships carrying troops to Europe across
the Atlantic. But the enemy has no
intention of allowing them to reach
land, dispatching a wolfpack of Nazi
U-boats to sink the Greyhound and all
who follow her.
While Schneider acknowledges that
“World War 2’s been done before, and

certainly Tom Hanks has done it
before,” he points out that “nobody’s
really explored naval battle – at least,
recently”. Instead, Hanks and
Schneider turned to the classics of the
(mini)genre from the 1940s and ’50s,
including Charles Frend classic The
Cruel Sea, to work out what makes naval
pictures sink or swim. “It was fun to
realise we could play in that sandbox
and still feel relatively new.”
But primarily, Schneider says, it’s
Greyhound’s narrative approach that
makes it unique. “I would call it a
thriller combined with an intense
character study,” the director explains.
