Bottom-left is an advert from the inside-
front cover of World Soccer magazine (still
going strong) in October 1964. Umbro
was founded by Harold and Wallace
Humphreys in Wilmsow, Cheshire, in
1924 and it stood for Humphreys Brothers
Clothing.
Near-left below shows Ron Yeats and
Roger Hunt with the Charity Shield, on
the November 1966 cover of Charles
Buchan’s Football Monthly, founded by a
former captain of Sunderland, Arsenal and
England.
Below it’s Tommy Smith on the cover of
Goal in September 1968, with a caption
inside that says: “Not the most popular
player in the game [!] but a great one to
have on your side.”
To the right, Reds wing-wizard Peter
Thompson on the front of Charles
Buchan’s title, this time in September
1967; while below-right Ron Yeats and
Tommy Lawrence run out for Soccer
Star, a weekly publication which was
incorporated into World Soccer in 1970.
