FOOTIE MAGS
Left: the first part of an LFC ‘team
set’ in Football Pictorial (formerly
Football Supporter) in January
1971, featuring six Reds stars on
the outside back cover and their
respective profiles on the reverse,
the idea being to cut them out and
assemble them like playing cards,
with 12 for each top-flight team.
In March that year the same
publication profiled 22-year-old
winger Steve Heighway, “Easter
Road, Edinburgh, on a cool evening
and Liverpool are hot and bothered.
Hibs are turning it on [but] suddenly
a flash of red jersey. Heighway,
probably the most exciting
youngster to hit the English First
Division this season, has broken
from midfield with the ball at his
feet. A subtle change of pace and
direction and the Hibs defence is
teetering. Heighway spurts to the
line and just when it seems he’s
taken a stride too many, pulls back
a cross for John Toshack to head
in. Liverpool are on their way to a
third-round Fairs Cup win and Bill
Shankly is left crowing about his
latest and possibly greatest young
acquisition since Emlyn Hughes.”
