  1. Mantis
    BY SARA JAZBAR

This striking macro image is tack-sharp and was
captured without a tripod. The punchy colours are
another defining factor, which pops the mantis
against the blurred background.

Camera: Nikon D500
Lens: 150mm f/2.8
Exposure: 1/200 sec, f/5.6, ISO320

  1. Ahoy!
    BY ERIC BROWETT

No wildlife photography shortlist would be
complete without a photo of a puffin. The beautiful
purple hue was achieved by capturing the subject
from a boat, through a patch of bluebells.

Camera: Nikon D7100
Lens: 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6
Exposure: 1/500 sec, f/7.1, ISO180

  1. Flapping Photo
    BY LIGHTBROOM

Hummingbirds are known for flapping their wings
at lightning-fast speed, so we applaud this image
for conveying that sense of motion. The shutter
speed was fast enough to capture the little bird’s
facial features, but slow enough to blur the wings.

Camera: Nikon D4S
Lens: 600mm f/4
Exposure: 1/320 sec, f/8, ISO5000

  1. Golden Goat
    BY ALES KRIVEC

This image was taken in the Julian Alps and is a
reminder that not all great wildlife shots depict a
tightly cropped subject. And by keeping the animal
small within the frame, we’re treated to more of
that gorgeous golden light.

Camera: Nikon D800
Lens: 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6
Exposure: 1/160 sec, f/16, ISO160

  1. Stuck in a Rut
    BY ELLY RUSSELL

A high ISO was used to compensate for the low light
and slow lens to make sure this fantastic exchange
between two rutting stags was captured crisply.

Camera: Nikon D810
Lens: 150-600mm f/5-6.3
Exposure: 1/800 sec, f/6.3, ISO1000
