A
lthough I work full-time
as a cancer researcher, I’ve
always had an artsy side. In
2013, I volunteered to paint peo-
ple’s faces at a charity event—I
was surprised by how much
I enjoyed myself. My wheels
started turning and I thought,
Why not have more fun painting
faces and getting paid for it?
“To get more comfortable,
I practiced by using myself as
a guinea pig. I’d study designs
I liked, then paint them on my
arms, legs or face. Before long,
I was booking jobs at birthday
parties, charity events and fam-
ily reunions. These days, I’m
able to brush up on my sk illsand learn more intricate designs
from YouTube and FABA TV

for me when kids request some-
thing unusual because I get to
tap into my creative side!
“Typically, it takes about two
hours to prepare for each event,
between stocking and packing
supplies, making sure my paints
and brushes are clean, driving to
the site and setting up. Once I
arrive, the job can be anywhere
from 2 to 4 hours. During the
summer and fall, I usually aver-
age about two jobs a month.
The winter months tend to be
slower, but I’ll take gigs as theycome up. I earn about $600 per
month during the busy season,
and I either donate it to charity,
put it back into the business or
use it to buy supplies.
“The best part of my ‘side
hustle’ is finding an outlet for
my creativity and helping make
people look beautiful. It’s like
transforming a person into art!
Recently, I got the chance to do
cat face paint on attendees at a
local premiere of the movie Cats
in an art museum, and it was
pure fun. My favorite moments
are when I finish painting
someone, hand them a mirror
and see them break into a big
