appealed to the king against a lower court ruling which had found
in favour of his opponent. Also, certain major offences, including
sorcery, bestiality, various forms of moral pollution and a range of
other offences which attracted the death penalty were judged in the
king’s court, and in many cases by the king himself in his capacity
