staircase to what was undoubtedly the main entrance to the city. This
was the so-called Lion Gate,flanked by two roaring lions and located
to the northwest of the Sphinx Gate. Almost all visitors to the city,
whatever their mission or purpose, entered and departed the city via
this gate. To the east of it, and north of the Sphinx Gate, lay a
