is behind the desk - but this will
be his last gig at the venue.
“I am moving to Dubai in three
days,” he says, “so this will be
my final performance here.”
On his approach to this
show, he says: “I only ever do
lights live - I never use timecode.
It’s like I am an organist;
I treat my desk as if it’s a large
ELO keyboard. And just like
a concert pianist, I know exactly
how I want to hit the keys. This
desk here - I use an Avolites
Pearl Expert and a Touch wing -
is all I’ll ever need. I know how
its buttons behave, I am used to
the pressure each key needs. In
fact, if Steve Warren [of Avolites]
ever phones me up and asks if
I needed a new desk, I’d say:
‘No, fix this one!’”
In terms of Troxy’s
houselights, Sanders’ main
workhorses are four Robe
Pointes positioned on the DJ
booth, with four Robe 250s
immediately on the floor below,
and six Robe Robin 600E
profiles providing ambience
from the back truss. On the
front truss, six Claypaky B-Eye
K20 washes are used, and there
are two four-cell Molefays on
the far left and right used as
audience blinders. “The Pointe
is still the best light for dance
music today, in my opinion,”
says the LD. “It behaves very
much like a Golden Scan, which
was ubiquitous back in the day
of course.”
Working alongside Sanders
is laser tech Konstantinos
Ntounis from Lighting Design
Ltd. He is triggering five Nexus
FB4 6W lasers, all supplied by
Lighting Design Ltd., using the
Beyond software from Pangolin
Laser Systems. “This is my first
gig with illumiNaughty, but I’ve
done 10 years of video, lighting

and laser work in clubs and the
like in Greece,” he explains.
“I have been working here in the
UK for a year now. For this show,
I trigger live throughout the
night - I don’t rely on cues.
I talk to Dan about what he does
during the show, so we can
coordinate our moves and keep
the balance right.”
Tom Sutton-Roberts, general
manager at Troxy, joined the
venue’s in-house staff around
five years ago and set about
making essential upgrades to the
venue. This included choosing
a new JBL-based sound system
two years ago. For this event,
the venue’s two hangs of 12 JBL
VTX-A12 are deployed along with
four VTX-A8 elements as delays.
Downstage are three stacks of
four VTX G28 sub cabinets.
“I come from a sound
engineering background, so
I knew what I was looking for
in the sound,” says Sutton-
Roberts. “I wanted a system that
would sound the same wherever
you are in the room - and the
JBL does this. You can walk
anywhere in the room and get
the same experience. Then, as
you move towards the back of
the Main Hall, the delays will
pick up just before the levels
start to drop-off.”
On working with tonight’s
event promoters, he says:
“illumiNaughty are a great
bunch - just look at what they’ve
done with the place. They’ve
been doing events here for at
least four years now and it’s
a pleasure working with them.”
illumiNaughty will be back
at Troxy on 30 October with
Shamanic Tales, which will
transform the venue into a deep
jungle where new spirits will be
found... I
