THEATRE

First came the song, just a year after ABBA won the 1974
Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton. Then the musical
arrived in 1999... but that was not the end, as the hit films
of 2008 and 2018 continued to keep the spirit of Mamma
Mia! alive. And now, ‘here we go again’, this time at
London’s O2 as Mamma Mia! The Party arrives in the UK,
bringing ABBA-esque magic to a corner of the venue that’s
been spectacularly transformed into a Greek taverna to host
an immersive theatrical dining experience like no other.

Mamma Mia! The Party (MM!TP), by Björn Ulvaeus, Calle
Norlen and Roine Soderlundh and with a script adaptation

by Sandi Toksvig, is set in the fictional Nikos Taverna
on the similarly fictional Greek island of Skopelos -
a location beloved of all ABBA devotees, of which there
are many (the latest figures estimate that more than
60 million have seen the musical so far). This level of
audience enthusiasm for both the musical and thence
the films sets the bar extremely high for the creative team
behind this latest ABBA incarnation. The set, the sound,
the lights and the performers all have to fulfil to the
nth-degree the audience expectations of a stunning visual
and sonic experience.
