LAUREN
DAIGLE
You Say

The 26-year-old
Louisiana native also
logs a second week
atop the Hot Christian
Songs chart.

When and how were you first exposed to
Christian music?
I played a camel [when I was 3 years old]
in the church Christmas play and told
my mom, “I want to do this forever.” Our
choir director took me under his wing and
taught me gospel harmonies.

As a Christian artist, what does having
“You Say” make the Hot 100 signify to you?
Certain audiences may have been isolated
in the past just because [my music is] in
the Christian genre. I want to tear down
the genre wall as a whole and make music
about what I believe in and that doesn’t

alienate anyone. This is a song people can
hold on to to remind them of how valuable
they are.

What factored into the release of your
sophomore album, Look Up Child (out
Sept. 7), getting pushed back five times?
I knew I needed to experience life again.
I didn’t want to regurgitate what I had
already made. In order to do that, I just
needed to rediscover and reinvent. I have
a Mr. Potato Head toy, and I bring it on
trips to remind myself to take things
lightly. I wanted to bring that childlike joy
to the record. —TATIANA CIRISANO

As the track tops Radio Songs
(116.4 million in audience, up
13 percent), Maroon 5 earns
its sixth No. 1, passing Boyz II
Men for the most leaders in the
list’s 27-year history.
