CBD FOR HEALTH
As mentioned above, CBD interacts with the
endocannabinoid system to offer potential benefits
such as better sleep, reduced anxiety and pain
control – but CBD companies can’t make these
claims on their packaging. A 2017 British Journal
of Pharmacology review identified growing
evidence to suggest CBD could help anxiety-
related and substance-abuse disorders – although
more studies are needed to determine the exact
mechanisms involved. Another small 2019 US
study found CBD may help short-term sleep
problems. In short, the jury’s still out – but the
results so far are hugely encouraging. Meanwhile,
there’s a wealth of anecdotal evidence: Dr Brewer
herself, for example, takes CBD to promote a
good night’s sleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

CBD FOR FITNESS
With its touted anti-inflammatory and relaxing
properties, it’s no surprise CBD is being introduced
to a wide range of fitness products, such as
muscle rubs, to aid recovery and ease the pain of
injury. Pharmacist Tom Chapman explains, ‘CBD
has been shown to suppress the inflammatory
response, along with the neuropathic pain that
athletes may experience. It improves sleep quality,
important for recovery after exercise, and helps
address muscle soreness, tension and spasms.’
