Wake up call
Struggle to get out of bed for an early workout? It could be down to your
morning alarm, say researchers. In a study at The Royal Melbourne Institute of
Technology University in Australia, scientists quizzed 50 participants about the
sound of their morning alarm, and compared it to their feeling of sleep inertia
on waking (the transitional state between sleep and wakefulness, often
marked by impaired performance, reduced vigilance and a desire to go back
to sleep). Those who woke to a melodic sound said they felt more alert than
those with harsher alarms, such as intermittent electronic tones. Programme
your alarm with a tune you love and you’ll be hitting the gym in no time!
