Caroline Artiss has written her first
book about the power of diet to help
you look and feel your best. When
growing up, ‘the house was filled
with scents of lavender, tea tree and
peppermint’, says Artiss, ‘and if we
were ever unwell, the ginger root
would be whipped out and made
into a ginger, honey and lemon tea,
or a pot of chicken soup would be
on the stove. My mother told me
the soup would keep me looking
young as well.’
Fast-forward several years and, after
training as a nutritionist, Artiss has
combined her love of food with a
childhood seeped in all things beauty, in
Beauty Foods: 65 Nutritious and Delicious
Recipes That Make You Glow from the
Inside Out (Ryland Peters & Small, £9.99).
The book opens with sections on skin,
hair & nails, eyes, muscles, bones & teeth
and digestion, each offering a lowdown on
the nutrients you most need for optimum

health and wellbeing, along with
comprehensive charts outlining individual
food’s nutritional content and beauty
benefits. Cranberries, for example, contain
fibre, manganese, phytochemicals and
small amounts of vitamins E and K.
They’re also ‘packed with antioxidants
that help prevent oxidation damage of
cells from free radicals, and large amounts
of polyphenols and flavonoids help to
repair skin damage’, explains Artiss.
But it’s in the core of the book where
you’ll see the beauty results you’re looking
for: each recipe is colour-coded so you
can target your concerns – Peanut butter,
chia, oat and chocolate breakfast cookies,
for example, will support your hair and
nails, skin and digestion; Spirulina green
chicken salad is good for your muscles
and bones as well as your skin, hair
and nails.
The majority of ingredients used are
available from supermarkets or your local
health food store so won’t break the bank,
and Artiss suggests picking a couple of
recipes from each category – skin, hair,
eyes and so on – to ensure you get a
well-balanced, all-over beauty diet.
Looking good never tasted so great!
