We’re Serıous About Skin

PUMPED UP

Any moderate
to vigorous
cardio will get
skin boosters
like oxygen
and exerkines
flowing. T

o prove it, this issue kicks off our first
annual Shape Skin Awards (that’s
our new logo above—you can find
them on page 25), in which we asked
top dermatologists for the innova-
tions in treatments, products, and tech that blow
them away. What we learned is truly life—and
skin—changing. My big takeaway: Stress is even
more damaging to skin than previously thought,
so I’m getting serious about managing the daily
stressors in my life. Here’s how other Shape staff-
ers are putting this cutting-edge info to good use.

“WHEN I’M in Spinning class, I think of how sub-
stances called exerkines are being released by my
muscles and coursing through my body to simul-
taneously strength train my skin cells, something
I learned while researching “Strength Train
Your Skin” (page 47). Specifically, exerkines reen-
ergize the mitochondria, or power center of
the cells, so they act younger and rejuvenate the
skin. My workout is doing double duty.”
—Mary Anderson, deputy editor

“I KNOW A LOT about the topicals you can apply
on your skin to help protect and repair it
from UV-light exposure. But while reporting
this year’s Skin Awards (page 25), I learned
about a gummy supplement, Sundaily’s Base
Layer, that can help do that from the inside.
Obviously, I immediately tested them on vaca-
tion. They even taste good!”
—Kate Sandoval Box, beauty director

“I’D HEARD ABOUT the health benefits of dark
chocolate, but while researching our Food Lab
piece, “Beauty Boosters” (page 80), I learned
that it also improves your skin thanks to the fla-
vonoids. I can’t think of better news.”
