NOTE ON DATES AND TRANSLITERATION

All dates referring to events in Russia are given according to the
Julian calendar (in force in Russia until 1918), which lags behind the
Gregorian by twelve days in the 19th century and by eleven in the 18th.
Russian words, names, and tides have been transliterated on the
basis of current spelling and according to the system in use at the
Widener Library of Harvard University, with a few minor diacritical
simplifications. Names commonly found in English publications have
been spelled in the manner that tradition has imposed, unless they
are part of a Russian title.
The following abbreviations occur commonly in the notes and
bibliographies:
