“I’d been working on making a purely abstract piece, but it wasn’t coming
together,” says Wright of By July the Pansies Get Leggy (acrylic, collage,
graphite and oil pastel on paper, 20x26). “In desperation—and inspiration—
I collaged some large pieces of painted rice paper and turned the painting
sideways. Suddenly, I could see fl owerpots and a few fl ower shapes in what
was already begun. My palette knife came in very handy for the leaf shapes.”
