hroughout tax season, many
people commit to improving
their financial organization—
next year. Such a resolution is a step
in the right direction, but accounting
isn’t only about taxes. A thorough and
solid grasp of record-keeping can
really help an artist’s studio practice.

TRACK YOUR GOALS
Start by thinking about what you’d like
to achieve or change in regard to your
art and studio practice. This doesn’t
have to involve a radical makeover. In
fact, I discourage people from trying
to change too much at once. Not only
is that frighteningly disruptive, but it

won’t help without a concrete reason
for changing everything.
Consider where you’d like to see
yourself and your work in five years.
Let your imagination land somewhere
between self-effacement and fairy-tale
scenarios. Write down your hopes.
Then, using that written statement

Keeping accounts of all aspects of your art-making


lends control and clarity to your goals.
