creenFlow is a screen capture
and editing package that lets you
create screencasts, which have
become increasingly popular in our
always-on world. While QuickTime has
basic screen recording tools, ScreenFlow is
much more advanced with animation, titling,
graphics and ‘callout’ tools, amongst other
things, to let you create professional-looking
and sounding videos.
To its already-impressive feature set,
version 9 adds some new tools to improve
workflow. To begin with, there’s the customary
under-the-hood improvements that ensure
compatibility with the latest version of macOS,
and the graphics cards in the most recent Mac
models. Although ScreenFlow is very user-
friendly, the technology behind high-resolution

screen recording is complex, so it’s always
good to have the latest version.

The headlines
The first headline new feature is multi-screen
recording – when creating a new project you
can choose to record from more than one
screen, which is very helpful for showing
multiple apps without having to juggle
windows. Next is a new tool palette containing
hand, zoom, blade, and track select tools.
Arguably somewhat overdue, this is still a
nice addition and tools can be invoked using
simple keyboard shortcuts, which quickly
become second nature.
Proxy editing, which can be toggled in
the Preferences section, enables you to edit
high-resolution images without taxing your
Mac too much – perfect for slower systems.
When you export, the full res versions are
used so you don’t lose quality. There’s a new
clip editor that works much like Adobe
Premiere, where you can double-click on a clip
from the library and set its start and end points
before dropping it into the timeline, saving
time resizing it after you do. Finally, new click
effects with more animation options help you
more clearly illustrate your mouse movements.
Despite a couple of minor niggles – its
handling of third-party audio plugins still
leaves something to be desired – ScreenFlow
remains the best way to create and edit screen
recordings on your Mac. HOLLIN JONES
