havea pictureofhowourbrainsensestheworld
aroundit,howit createsandrecallsmemoriesandhow
emotionstakeshape.Butaska psychologistwhat
makesusself-aware,andyou’llgetdifferentanswers
dependingonwhoyouask.Somesayit’sanillusion,
otherssayit’sa by-productofourbrain’smechanics,andsome
eventhinkconsciousnesscouldbetheresultofquantumphysics.
Thewide-rangingnatureofthesetheories,andindeedthe
slipperynatureofconsciousnessitself,makesthingstricky.That’s
whyoneinstitutionhascreatedwhat,fromtheoutside,lookslikea
scienceBattleRoyale.A dozenorsotheorieswillgohead-to-head,
inwhat’scalledadversarialcollaboration.Inthisformat,teams
