One of HS’sfirstpolitical PR campaigns
came in 1994 when disciplesmarched
throughTokyo waving placards demanding
‘STOP THE HAIR NUDES!’; theyobjected
to modernJapanese porn-mags openly
displaying pubic hair insteadofobscuring
it withalittle blackrectangle. Assalarymen
oftenread suchpublications on trains, the
Happiesfeltkidsmight sneakapeek,thus
warping their minds. By damning these “hair
nudes”, Okawahoped to gain kudosfrom
moral conservatives.^12 But suchactivities
caused moreliberalfolk alarm,due to the
general anti-religious sentiments“which
leftishpost-war educationhas fostered”.
Thereare manyshinshukyo,ornew
religious movements, inJapan, the best-
known being the now-bannedAumShinrikyo,
whose deadlysarin gas attackonthe Tokyo
subway in 1995 killed 13 people and injured
5,000. It iswell remembered thatAumplotted
massmurder only after beingrejectedby
voters at the1990 General Election–would
theHappies oneday do the same? Seemingly
not.TheHRP preaches onlypeace;except
against Pyongyang, obviously. Okawasays
he actuallytriedto warn authoritiesabout
Aum’splans to attackTokyo withremote-
controlled, sarin-loaded mini-helicopters,
claiming hewastargetedbythe cult himself,
having VX nerve-agent pumpedinto his car
byassassins.HSandAumdid not get on;
as Aum’sperverted, semi-sightless leader
ShokoAsaharaused to clip and collect his
followers’pubes, whereas thefarsmoother
Master Okawawishedonlytobanish such
hairyhorrorsfromhis sightforever, they
proved naturalenemies.Trading insults,
Okawacalled Shokoa“frog” due to his habit
of underwateryoga,while Shokomocked
Okawa’s lack of asceticism; possiblyitwas
suchrelentless Master-baitingthatmade
Asaharablind in the first place. Nonetheless,
in thewakeof Aum’sattacks,restrictiveanti-
shinshukyolawswere passed,so entering
politicswasaprudent counter-move.
In 1995,HSfoundedTheAssociationfor
theProtection of the Nation from Heretical
Religions, therebyasserting that, unlike Aum,
theywerenot one, andrecruited prominent
politicians to their cause, likemainstream
LDPParty MP Hiroshi Mitsuzuka. In the book
Hiroshi Mitsuzukafor Prime Minister!HS
offered the LDP support on strict condition
their smilingacolytewasmadeits leader.^13
But he neverwas, so HS took matters into
theirownhands instead.
Oddlyenough, manyHRP policiesare
actually notthatfarfromthedomestic
political mainstream these days. In 2015,
aspects of Article9ofthe constitutionwere
indeedbypassedbythe current LDP PM,
ShinzoAbe,just as Okawa wanted, and, given
NorthKorea’spenchantforWMD-based
blackmail, the notion ofanuclear-armed
Japan is no longerquite as unthinkable as
it oncewas. Inresponse to demographic
decline, PM Abe has cautiouslybegun
opening the borderstolarger and larger
numbersofEastAsian migrant-workers
too,hoping to turbo-charge the free-market
economy. Rather surprisingly, HappyDays
might lie aheadforJapanafter all...NOTES
