MacOS is easy to use, but with each new
iteration Apple has hidden away more and
more of the nuts and bolts of the OS. And
it still doesn’t provide easy tools for tasks
like uninstalling apps, which often bury
their content deep in system folders. It’s
also easy to accumulate a lot of media

of which is hard for the average user to

Even the more technically minded users
have to use disparate apps to monitor and
tweak system performance.
Enter Sensei, a “performance tool” that
runs on any Mac that supports Catalina.
Its interface is slick and easy to use, while
under the hood it scans all the dark
corners of the system where clutter can
accumulate. It provides several core tools.
First is Dashboard, which displays stats
about your hardware, RAM and CPU usage
in a very clear fashion. This is useful for
understanding which apps or processes
are using resources, and quitting or even

Next is Optimize, where you can disable
launch agents and login items such as
unwanted printer helpers, which can
hang around using memory long after the
hardware has given up the ghost. A very
straightforward uninstaller is next,
allowing the removal of apps with a few
clicks. Oddly this would sometimes claim
it was unable to delete apps when several
were selected, but repeating the process
seemed to work after a couple of tries.

folders and again allows quick deletion, or
at least tells you what’s using space so the

drive. The Trim tab, which uses an

altering the way that data is written.
Finally, a hardware monitoring section
shows you stats about storage, battery,
graphics, and cooling. Your Mac shouldn’t
overheat if it’s working properly, but this
section can help you understand what’s
going on if there is a problem.
Sensei is a fantastic app, particularly

uninstalling apps and libraries, as well as
monitoring performance and battery
health. It’s the kind of app that’s so
useful Apple should include it in macOS.
THE BOTTOM LINE. An invaluable and

your Mac healthy and nimble. Apple
ought to take notice. HOLLIN JONES
