IS THERE A HUB
WITH THREE USB–C
PORTS YET?
Yes, but it comes with a
“free” built–in LG UltraFine
4K display. That offers one
additional Thunderbolt 3
port, and three USB–C.
Smaller hubs are becoming
available now: Belkin
promises one with two
USB–C ports, and more may
come in the future.
HOW TO PRINT A PDF
WHICH WON’T IN
ACROBAT READER?
Open it using Preview, or
another PDF reader, and
print it from there. If it still
won’t oblige, save it as a
different file, and try printing
that. If that doesn’t work,
printing could be disabled
for that PDF, or it could be
defective or damaged, and
you should obtain a
substitute if you can.
This is unusual for a peripheral like a printer,
and is the result of the printer’s firmware not
fully implementing secure networking
connections using HTTPS. Safari and most
other web browsers now insist that secure
network connections are made using recent
versions of Transport Layer Security (TLS),
and with valid security certificates which can
be traced back to a Certificate Authority. This
is to protect you, and applies equally well
whether the other end of the connection is
a printer a couple of metres away, as in your
case, or a server in California.
Your printer tries to negotiate its secure
connections using a self–signed security
certificate, which is easily forged or cheated.
All good browsers should now draw attention
to this, and recommend you don’t trust it.
Some browsers let you ignore this, but that’s
increasingly dangerous because of the growth
in sites that exploit such weaknesses.
Open the printer’s settings and switch
from using secure HTTPS connections to
unsecured HTTP. Those don’t rely on security
certificates, and aren’t encrypted either, so
should be fine for local connections within
your network. You wouldn’t then want to
connect to that printer from the internet,
although you shouldn’t do that without going
through VPN to your router anyway.
> Security problems with printer
Whenever I connect to my networked HP 7740 printer using Safari, I get a warning that
“This Connection Is Not Private” and am advised that I “should go back to the previous
page”. Why, and how can I stop this?
Mozilla Firefox lets you install your own trusted certificates in its Preferences.
