ThispragmaticviewwasalsovisibleamongtheolderofficerranksintheTurkish
army.TheyoungerTurkishofficersalsohighlyadmiredMustafaKemal.Kenan
Kocatürkrecalledhowhesawhisnationalheroforthefirsttimeattheseaside:
“IfAta[türk]atthisdaywouldhavesaidtous‘Allofyoudiveintotheseafrom
thislandingstage’Iwouldhavebeenthefirstonetojump.”¹⁹⁵
Resultingfromthisattitude,theGermanmodelofrecruitingofficersinac-
cordancewiththeirreliabilitybecameacommonpracticeintheTurkisharmy.
GonewerethedaysoftheOttomanalaylısystemwithnepotistofficercircles
lackinghigheracademicmilitaryeducation.¹⁹⁶JustlikeinthecaseoftheReichs-
wehr,theTurkishcommanderswhorefusedtoaccepttheprimacyofpoliticsover
themilitaryhadtoleavethearmy.Thiswasalessonlearnedinbothcountries
fromthemilitarydominanceofImperialpolitics.Militarydutiesandtheexertion
ofpoliticalpoliticalpowerwerenotreconcilableintheRepublic,withanexcep-
tionofthestateofemergencyundertightpoliticalcontrol.Nonetheless,inboth
armies,theideaofoverthrowingunpopularpoliticalrulerswasmorethanjusta
thoughtexperimentofamilitarymind.¹⁹⁷
