EventhoughtheabolishmentofthecavalrywasfrequentlydebatedintheGer-
manmilitaryperiodicals,theterrainconditionsattheEasternborderdemanded
mountedtroops.TheReichswehrandWehrmachtskippedthestepofcreating
mixedmounted,motorizedandmechanizedunits.TheGermanarmoreddivi-
sionswerefullymotorized,whereasthemajorityoftheinfantryandcavalry
unitsdidnothavemotorvehicleswellintotheSecondWorldWar.³⁰¹Forthe
aforementionedCavalryInspector-GeneralMürsel[Bakü],everycountryhadto
finditsownsolution,whetheritwastheuseofafullymotorizedarmyorapar-
tiallymotorizedandpartiallymountedarmy.Mürselremarkedthatboth,Germa-
nyandTurkeyhadtoimportmotorfuel,whichcouldparalysethemotorized
armyinthecaseofablockade.³⁰²TheTurkishdebate,inthefollowingyears,
wasmarkedbytranslationsfromGerman,French,BelgianandBritishmilitary
periodicals.TheGermanrearmamentprogrammereceivedutmostadmiration,al-
thoughitsadaptationtoTurkishconditionswasnotconsidered.TheTurkishob-
serverswerewellawarethatGermanycouldnotsustainalongerwarinitspres-
entmilitarystate.³⁰³However,Turkishmilitaryperiodicalsdidnotquestionthe
GermanpropagandataleofthemotorizedWehrmacht.Asindicatedabove,the
Germanindustrialcapacitieswerenotsufficienttosupplyenoughmotorvehicles
formilitaryuse.Duringthefastarmamentperiodinthe 19 30s,themajorityof
theWehrmacht,consistingof36divisions,hadtorelyonhorses.Despiteall
theeffortsbythemilitaryandtheNationalSocialistregime, 90 percentofthe
Germanarmywasstillnotmotorizedby1 940 .³⁰⁴TheTurkishanalystsalsofa-
voredtheuseofanimalsforsupplytransport.Thishadbeenavaluableand
wellfunctioningsystemduringthewaragainstGreece;aquitelogicalsolution
foranagrariculturalcountry.Inpeacetime,thesupplyunitshadtobepre-
