122 Fist Fighting and Self-Cultivation
(Jet Li) Fearless (2005) have familiarized Western audiences with Huo’s “Con-
founding-Track Fist.”
The modern style is also referred to by various other names, some of which
are homophonous with Mizong quan (Confounding-Track Fist) but differ from
it semantically, being written in other characters. It is known as the “Tantric
Fist” (Mizong quan) and the “Wild-Beast Fist” (Nizong quan), as well as “Yan-
Qing Fist” (Yanqing quan). These diverse titles suggest that the technique has
evolved, at least partially, within an illiterate environment. By the time its prac-
titioners sought to write it down, they variously interpreted its phonetic pro-
nunciation: Mizong.^26
