Some Editions of the Sinews Transformation Classic
(The best modern edition is included in Zhongguo chuantong yangsheng zhendian Ё
ڇ㍅仞⫳⦡ (Rare classics of Chinese traditional methods for nourishing life), edited
by Ding Jihuaφ㑐㧃 et al., pp. 202–330. Beijing: Renmin tiyu, 1998.)
(1) Early Qing, possibly seventeenth-century, manuscript edition. The postscript
by Zining daoren ㋿ޱ䘧Ҏ is undated. The comment “Stored at the Narrating-An-
tiquities Library of Qian Zunwang” might indicate that the manuscript belonged to
the library of Qian Ceng 䣶᳒ (st yle: Zunwang ᇞ⥟) (1629–1701) (even though the
book is not listed in his extant library catalogue). Copy at the National Central Li-
brary, Taipei.
(2) Qing manuscript edition. The postscript by Zining daoren is undated.
Kangxi period (1662–1722) preface attributed to the Recluse from the Clouds Shrine
(Yuntan yinshi 䳆ປ䲅) Wang Jingyang ∾᱃䱑. Copy at the Shanghai Library.
(3) Early nineteenth-century printed edition. The observance (on p. 62a) of
the taboo on Emperor Minning’s ᯏᆻ name identifies it as belonging to his Dao-
guang (1821–1850) reign period. The twelve exercises of “Weituo Offering His
Club” (which were later incorporated into the Illustrated Exposition of Internal Tech-
niques) are included, as is the Marrow-Cleansing Classic (Xisui jing ⋫傧15点). Appen-
dix by “Mr. Laizhang” (Laizhang shi ՚ゴ⇣). Copy at the Shanghai Library.
(4) 1875 printed edition titled Guarding Life and the Sinews Transformation Clas-
sic (Weisheng Yijin jing 㸯⫳ᯧㄟ15点). Pan Weiru’s Essential Techniques of Guarding Life
(Weisheng yaoshu 㸯⫳㽕㸧) of 1858 is included. On this edition (which I have not
