ighteen months after making its first step
into the full-frame mirrorless market with
the EOS R, the world’s number one camera
manufacturer has announced the pro-spec EOS R5.
In some ways, this is the camera many Canon
aficionados wished the brand had unveiled in 2018.
While capable, the EOS R was also compromised,
so the EOS R5 really doesn’t hold back in the
specification stakes. Its sensor size hasn’t been
revealed, but the R5 gets in-body stabilisation and
twin card slots. Canon promises a “step-change” in
performance, with 12fps via the mechanical shutter
and 20fps when using the electronic one. And
videographers will be as pleased as stills shooters,
as the EOS R5 will be able to capture 8K footage.
The family of compatible RF-mount lenses has
grown, too, with the addition of the RF 24-105mm
f/4-7.1 IS STM – a smaller, lighter and more
affordable kit lens. This will be a good fit for the
smallest model in the nascent EOS R line-up, the
EOS RP. Weighing just 395g and measuring 89 x
77mm, this new optic is still sturdy and well-built.
