Fabulous
food
Capture some tasty
treats and enter our
monthly photo contest
alk into any restaurant at any
time and you’ll instantly be
presented with a range of
stunningly edible delights.
Photographing food is a
carefully considered art, and it can feel like
a very difficult subject to get right at first,
although we did lend a guiding hand in
February’s cover feature (issue 225).
All you need to get some great images of
food is an entry level or enthusiast camera,
or even a decent cameraphone: just grab
whatever works best and start snapping.
The background you photograph food
against is just as important as the food itself.
Use something that will create a mood or
tone, rather than just a blank, white area.
Some people use a rustic tablecloth or even
some textured wood to place their items on.
Successful food photography is all down
to the little details. You might use a shallow
depth of field for photographing a large
plate, or home in on some smaller elements
instead. Spices sprinkled around the dish,
for example, can lend a wider impression of
the taste of the food you’re photographing.

10 | SHOOTING CHALLENGE
The Depths Of
Winter winner is...
Goran Mashanovich
In issue Digital Camera 225, we set you the
challenge to capture the depths of winter.
Congratulations to Goran, who has done
a fantastic job of fulfilling the brief.
We love how Goran has captured a
monochromatic-looking scene without
having to convert his image to black and
white. There are still hints of the colour in the
brown grasses and tree trunks, but otherwise
you wouldn’t have known. There is subtlety
to his image, with layers of trees that start
as a dark strip in the foreground and fade
to a lighter grey in the background. A great
image that makes you feel cold and wintery!
