IT’S ALL VERY WELL drinking through a metal
straw and pledging to ease the amount of fast-fashion
shopping orders we make every month in the name of
sustainability. But to really change the environmental state
of our planet, drastic and long-term efforts need to be made.
And, let’s be honest, while we want to be more environmentally
responsible, we don’t want to compromise on our quest for
beautiful design or surrounding ourselves with innovative
technology. So, when a brand like BMW pledges to offer all
of the above and more, we sit up and take note.
It should come as no surprise that the German car maker is
at the forefront of electrification and future mobility. The BMW
i3 was one of the first electric cars on to the market, having
launched a distant six years ago. And, let’s be clear, by going
green we mean you can drive from London to Brighton and
back on zero fumes*. Not to mention the fact that this beautifully
compact car is manufactured in an entirely wind-powered plant
and interior fabrics include plant-based derivatives.
Going green has been one of the brand’s core values for
years, with the BMW i3, i8 Coupé and Roadster all setting
the standard for what electrified cars can deliver. And these
models still look the part while not compromising on a powerful
driving experience. Try not to turn your head when an i8 drives
past. It strikes a serious style statement with futuristic curves
and interiors that sigh luxury when you slip inside. All of this
while helping ease pressure on the planet – we are impressed.
But technology and innovation never sleep, and the BMW
team have much more up its sleeve. The goal is to have a
stable of 25 electrified vehicles driving the roads by 2023,
and it’s already well on its way to making that a reality, with
Plug-In Hybrid models available across much of the range.

The sophisticated BMW iX3 will begin production this year
combining a brand-new, all-electric drive system while not
compromising on a hair-blowing engine power of zero to 62
miles per hour in five seconds. This will be followed by the
exciting BMW iNext, which will be enabled for highly
automated driving, saving much-needed multitasking time
or just letting you enjoy the ride. And we haven’t even
mentioned BMW Natural Interaction, which combines voice,
gesture and gaze technology to create the most personalised
experience yet. Imagine a built-in driver that knows exactly
how you like your music, air temperature and seat settings
on the way to work.
Never one to follow trends, the marque has true progress
written in its DNA. Its first officer for sustainability was
appointed in 1973, and since then BMW has been a trailblazer
for eco-conscious driving, from its EfficientDynamics approach
to the forward-thinking Plug-In Hybrid range. So, as we all
adapt to a new world – metal straws, sustainable shopping and
all – why wait to drive the future? It’s already arrived. n
