Like those candy sticks
from childhood, colorful
batiks twist in this design.

About This Quilt
This is one of those quilt
designs that that begs for a closer
look. The technique is pretty simple,
yet the results look challenging. We
give exact measurements, however
once you give the technique a try,
feel free to make it as improvisa-
tional as you like.

For each “stick” you will need 2 fat
quarters. Cut the fi rst assorted batik
fat quarter into strips from 2^3 ⁄ 4 " to
41 ⁄ 2 "-wide by 20" long. The second
fat quarter is cut into strips 1^1 ⁄ 2 "
to 2^1 ⁄ 2 " by 20" long. Karen usually
makes two of each colorway, but
switches the placement of the fi rst
and second color to use the fabric
equally.

You are working with a lot of bias
in making the “candy” units. Be
sure to use lots of pins and ease in
the bias as you insert the stabilizing
strip A’s. Keep white strips on top
as you sew to allow the feed dogs to
help ease in the bias.

Making the Sections and
Blocks

Sew 5 assorted batik strips and
5 coordinating assorted batik
strips together as shown to make a
band A, staggering each strip 2".

Using the 45 ̊ mark on your ruler,
cut a 6^1 ⁄ 2 " x 22" section as shown.

Repeat with remaining fat quarters
to make and cut 14 sections total.

Lay section on cutting table.
Measure 2" from left side, cut sec-
tion as shown. Without moving
the section, lay white A on top of
trimmed piece and pin in place,
easing bias edge as needed. Sew
together and press seams open.

Measure over 1^1 ⁄ 4 " on remaining
piece of section and cut. In the same
way, attach white A and press seam
open.

Repeat cutting another 1^1 ⁄ 4 " and
inserting white A as shown. Join
strips together as shown to make a
block. Repeat with remaining sec-
tions to make 14 blocks total.

Sew 3 assorted batik 1"-strips and
3 black batik 1"-strips together as
shown to make a band B. Cut the
band once at 18^1 ⁄ 2 " to make 1 unit 1
and at 13^1 ⁄ 2 " to make 1 unit 2 total.

Patches are lettered in order of use.
Measurements include ¼ ̋ seam
allowances. Border strips will be
pieced and cut to exact length need-
ed. You may want to make them
longer to allow for piecing variations.
