Tagore in Santiniketan, had told the poet the true nature of his broth-
er’s mission. In perhaps his last short story, written before his death in
August 1941, Tagore described the journey of a lonely traveler making
his way across the rugged terrain of Afghanistan in search of freedom.^46
The travails of one man in the midst of a world at war were far from
over.
