Map 2. 1721 The territorial divisions of Europe following the War of the Spanish Succession and the Great Northern War reflect a strong France and a surging Russian Empire. TheTreaty of Utrecht (1713) had settled the throne of Spain in favor of the grandson, Philip, of Louis XIV of France, although the new King Philip V had to renounce all tiesto the French throne. Russia, for its part, confirmed the defeat of Sweden with the Treaty of Nystad (1721) and took its place among the great powers of Europe.
