2.1061 Treaty of Alliance among Austria,

Hanover, and Saxony

Alliance Members:Austria, Hanover, and Saxony
Signed On:January 5, 1719, in the city of Vienna
Alliance Type:Defense Pact (Type I)
Source:Consolidated Treaty Series,vol. 31, p. 7.

SUMMARY
The Great Northern War appeared to be near its end when Charles XII
of Sweden died in November 1718; thus, the combatants began to dis-
cuss the issue of territorial transfers toward the later stages of the war.
A conflict emerged between Peter the Great of Russia and George I of
Great Britain (who was also the Elector of Hanover) who had been
brought into the war by a 1715 alliance with Russia. The two allies
were on hostile terms after a show of Russian forces in 1716 in Meck-
lenburg that was construed as an occupation.
On January 5, 1719, Austria, Hanover, and Saxony signed a treaty in
Vienna. The terms called for the refusal of passage for Russian forces
through Poland and into Prussia, where Prussia was in support of
Peter the Great’s claims, but Poland never fully agreed to the terms.
Peter the Great eventually withdrew his troops from Poland, but his
decision was made before the treaty. Peter the Great needed the addi-
tional forces to further prosecute the war against Sweden after he
rejected an initial peace proposal from Sweden.

Description of Terms
Alliance members pledged offensive and defensive alliance and
also that the Polish king would not allow Russian troops free
passage. The Holy Roman Emperor signed the treaty as sover-
eign of the hereditary territories of Hapsburg in Austria. King
George I of England signed as elector of Hanover, and King
Friedrich August I of Poland was included as elector of Saxony.
