Map 3. 1808 The 1808 map shows a world divided, old and new. While the Old World of Europe remained roiled in the Napoleonic Wars, a new state system was developing in theNew World. The United States was staking its claim to territories to the west and north; and in regions across Latin America, new states were beginning to break ties withtheir Spanish and Portuguese colonial masters.
