Map 6. 1949 The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Alliance no. 4.1347) was formed in April 1949 amid the backdrop of increasing tensions between the United States and theSoviet Union at the start of the cold war. Europe was divided between the two superpowers and soon, in May 1955, the North Atlantic Treaty was countered with theWarsaw Pact (Alliance no. 4.1360). The world of 1949 was dominated by these dueling influences of East and West and would remain


so until the breakup of the Soviet

Union in 1991.
