Map 7. 1993 By 1993, Russia had given up its claims to the Baltic states and the many former Soviet territories in eastern Europe and across central Asia. Still dominant on the conti-nent militarily, Russia was reeling from economic uncertainty and heavily dependent on aid from and cooperation with the West. It was in this context that the Russiansbegan seeking greater security and economic ties with neighbors (Alliance no. 4.1445) and key western states such as France (Alliance no. 4.1436 and 4.1441) and Italy(Alliance no. 4.1437), while it also sought a non-aggression pact with its former NATO adversaries (Alliance no. 4.1438).
