Narrative: On August 26, 1940, following clashes between Russian and Romanian
forces near the border with Hungary on land and in the air, Germany increased its
forces on the eastern front to number around 1,500,000 troops. Multiple shows of
force followed for almost a year as German and Russian forces passed along and
around the Balkan frontiers. Then, on June 22, 1941, Germany declared war on the
Soviet Union.
