Narrative: On March 10, 1942, a Uruguayan steamship was sunk off the coast of
Bermuda by a German U-boat. On August 1, a second Uruguayan ship was torpedoed
and sunk by German U-boats, and the captain was seized as well. On August 24, after
declaring a state of nonbelligerency (so that it could geographically assist Brazil in
its war on the Axis powers), Uruguay put its forces on alert. Uruguayan squadrons
patrolled the Uruguayan coastline from Punta del Este northward to the Brazilian
border. This was in response to a sighting the previous day of two submarines off the
coast which were assumed to be German.
